Answers

Looking for magazine or journal articles on a topic?

Electronic Resources is a list of all of the resources

we subscribe to in electronic format. These databases allow

you to search for your topic in many publications at once.

The subject guides will give you the best resources for your

major, or you can use the alphabetical list to go directly to a

specific database.

Need to look at an online journal or magazine?

Journal Finder shows you which journal and magazine titles

we have in the library in electronic format. Type in the title

of a journal (not an article title or topic) to see your options

for reading the articles on the computer.

Searching for books?

The Online Catalog is the tool for searching the collection

in the library. You can search for a specific title or author, or

get a list of books by searching for your topic as "word or

phrase." The list will give you information about the book,

and the call number will show you where to find it.

Electronic books that you can read on the computer also

show up in the catalog as "Available Online."

Reference Staff

Although everyone at Smith Library answers reference questions and assists students with their research needs, five staff members are primarily responsible for reference assistance.

Stephanie Parsons is Head of Reference Services and has been at Smith Library since August 2006. She provides research help and information at the reference desk and in consultation with students, faculty, and staff. Stephanie also offers research instruction sessions to undergraduate classes and develops the Reference collection and services. Originally from Kentucky, Stephanie got her B.A. in English at Centre College and also received an M.A. in English from UNC-Chapel Hill and MLIS from UNCG. When not at the library, Stephanie enjoys reading (really!), planning trips, home improvement projects, and playing with her dogs.

David L. Bryden is the Director of Library Services but also continues to provide reference and instructional services, especially to graduate classes.  He has been at High Point University since 1990. David is instrumental in maintaining and updating access to the databases such as LEXIS-NEXIS, Mergent and NCLive databases. David is also the technical contact for many of our web resources and maintains a portion of the URLs and links used for research by High Point University students. David was the winner of the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching/Service Award in 2001.

Betsy Merricks is the Assistant in the Reference Department. She helps students with research topics  but has as her primary responsibility ordering and filling Interlibrary Loan Requests. Interlibrary loans are materials (usually books and articles) which are requested by our patrons from other schools or information vendors. Betsy fills 95% of requests made by students and orders materials from libraries all over the country. Betsy also teaches research instruction classes at the library and works closely with faculty and students to help them complete research projects. Betsy received her M.A. in English from East Carolina University.  Her master’s concentration is Multicultural Literature.  She also has previous employment experience at East Carolina University's Joyner Library and University Archival and Rare Book Collections.

Robert Fitzgerald is the Evening Reference Librarian at Smith Library. He is available at the library from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m, Mondays through Thursdays. He received his Masters of Library Science degree from UNC-G. Bob is here to help the students, faculty and staff of H.P.U. with library-related issues such as subject research, paper citation, source identification and retrieval and use of the electronic resources. Bob acts as the evening supervisor of the library and truly enjoys assisting our many library patrons.

Susan E. Moses is the Late Night Reference Librarian. She helps students with reference questions, does research for faculty, handles the late night circulation responsibilities and also helps with interlibrary loan. She has a BA in English, Spanish, and Psychology from UNCG where she also received her Master's in Library Science.  She has been working at HPU since April 2006.
