Current Topics:
Our discussion for January Third will focus on
the Academic Mission Statement and the composition of a skills
based core curriculum. Selection criteria for the draft below
are drawn from the University’s charter, the University’s
mission statement, the University’s strategic plan, the
School’s academic mission statement, and it’s Quality
Enhancement Plan. In addition, the draft considers the work
the APC has already done concerning the need
to engage students, give students more choice, equip students
with critical skills, and so forth. For the
sake of discussion we will consider a 32 hour (eight courses)
core spread over four years. This core would develop skills in
writing and speaking, and quantitative, analytic, critical and
scientific reasoning. The discussion on the January 21st
could focus on the distribution requirements for content based
Arts and Sciences courses.
Proposed
- ACADEMIC MISSION STATEMENT
The academic mission of High Point University
is to engage students in the distinct intellectual heritages
of the liberal arts: mathematics and the natural sciences,
the social and behavioral sciences, the humanities and the
arts. To that end, High Point University’s liberal arts
curriculum is designed to cultivate intellectual judgment,
global and cultural awareness, as well as civic responsibility
and character development. Experiential learning
opportunities are combined with opportunities to master basic
competencies in quantitative analysis, written, oral, and
visual communication, and critical thinking. These
opportunities are integrated into the undergraduate, graduate,
and professional programs, creating educational experiences
contoured to the needs and interests of 21st
century students.
